The African Presence in Spanish Florida Part II: Fort Mose
The African American Heritage Society will present its second program in the series The African Presence in Spanish Florida: Fort Mose, Saturday, January 28, 2012, 7 PM, Bowden Building Classroom, Historic Pensacola Village.
Dr. Jane Landers will present a lecture/discussion about the history of this fortress of freedom north of St. Augustine which was established in 1783.
Dr. Landers is Associate Professor, Department of History, at Vanderbilt University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Latin American Colonial History.
In 2006, Dr. Landers published Slaves, Subjects and Subversives: Blacks in Colonial Latin America, University of New Mexico Press. She is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and encyclopedia chapters on this subject. Her conference papers, public lectures, media interviews, fellowships and professional activities on this subject are too numerous to list; however, notable awards are the President’s Prize of the Florida Historical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
